LEGACY GIVING
GIFTS THAT WILL
LEAVE A LEGACY
Whether you are taking those important first steps toward planning your estate or considering an update to your estate plan, Three Rivers Land Trust is here to help you achieve your long-term charitable goals. Through a planned gift to Three Rivers Land Trust, you can leave a legacy of peaceful forests, working farms, undeveloped open spaces, and picturesque vistas for your children and grandchildren.
WILLS AND BEQUESTS
A bequest is personal property given by your will, and is one of the easiest ways to make a gift to Three Rivers Land Trust. You can structure the bequest to leave a specific amount of money, or leave a percentage of your estate to the Land Trust. Unlike some other planned giving options, bequests allow you to change your mind at any time.
Your bequest is entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift’s full value. All that is needed is a few sentences in your will or trust. You can also easily add Three Rivers Land Trust to your will through a simple amendment called a codicil.
FREE WILL: CREATE YOUR LEGAL WILL ONLINE
You can also create an official legal document and start your estate planning with just a few clicks at freewill.com. You may also use this tool to generate language to take to your estate attorney and add TRLT as a beneficiary of your existing will. To make a bequest to TRLT through freewill.com, simply click “other” when prompted to consider making a gift through your will, and type in “Three Rivers Land Trust.”
BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS
Retirement plan assets, life insurance assets, and commercial annuities make up an increasingly large part of many estates. When left to your heirs, these assets can be subject to income, estate, and other transfer taxes. Naming the Land Trust as a beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of a percentage of your plan assets may reduce or eliminate both income and estate taxes. Many times these designations can be changed online, without the expense of an attorney.
GIFT OF LIFE INSURANCE POLICY
Life insurance is another asset that could be used to support TRLT, especially when a policy no longer serves its original purpose. These gifts often provide certain tax benefits, and are simple, flexible and have minimal paperwork. The beneficiary designation in your life insurance policy determines where the proceeds will be distributed, therefore are not typically transferred through your will. You can easily change the beneficiary designation of your life insurance policy at any time. You may also gift a policy by naming us as owner and beneficiary of your existing policy.
