Smith Branch Longleaf Pine Hike
Three Rivers Land Trust’s Hiking Club is hosting its next monthly hike at the Smith Branch Longleaf Preserve on June 5th, 2021.
This is a 105-acre property owned by the Land Trust, and not generally open to the public, so it is a unique opportunity to walk this beautiful property. We will meet at 222 Lost Lake Drive, Troy NC 27371 at 8:00am. (The early start time is so as to avoid the heat and humidity). This property is a managed longleaf pine forest, and there are some historic older longleaf on the site as well as restored sections of younger longleaf. Several species of rare plant are found here, including a number of species of orchid. The former landowner, Boon Chesson, will be helping lead this hike and will talk about the history and biodiversity of the site, the land management techniques that have been implemented, and the significance of longleaf on the Uwharrie landscape. We hope you can join us for this great hike.
Length of hike: 2 miles
Difficulty level: Easy
The land trust owned property where we will be hiking is not generally open to the public so this is a special treat for those who want to join our hiking club. The first hiking club event is free and after that you must be a land trust member to attend. The hiking club will hike every first Saturday of the month.
